Sheer bloody bravery! Soldier saves the lives of two comrades by throwing back the Talban grenade...

When a Taliban hand grenade landed at the feet of Rifleman James McKie he made a split second decision that saved his life and those of two comrades - by picking it up and throwing it back. As the soldiers came under fire from three different directions, the device exploded in mid air just yards away from where they were standing, sending shrapnel flying. Rifleman McKie, of Reconnaissance Platoon, 3rd Battalion The Rifles, suffered injuries to his face and right arm. Platoon Commander Captain Graeme Kerr was flown to Selly Oak Hospital in Birmingham after fragmentation hit his leg. Speaking...

You Have The Words Of Eternal Life

Many of his disciples turned back and no longer followed him. "You do not want to leave too, do you?" Jesus asked the Twelve. Simon Peter answered him, "Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life." "We believe and know that you are the Holy One of God." ~ John 6: 66-69

A patient's death prompts a doctor to assess 'Do Not Resuscitate' orders

...The papers clearly show that both CPR and intubation should have been off-limits. I didn't know this, and I erroneously saved my patient's life. I carefully explain that everything happened fast. We weren't aware of the DNR and the DNI. Now, he's stabilizing. Then I get the story: several failed rounds of chemo; several weeks of weakness, decreased appetite and depression; many days of feeling unwell. I hear that his meds don't include appetite stimulants, antidepressants or narcotics; why not? The family wants me to "make him comfortable." "Right now he's comfortable," I respond, and they appear surprised...

"What Does It Give? The Benefit of the Sacrament of the Altar" (Midweek Lenten Sermon Series)

“What Does It Give? The Benefit of the Sacrament of the Altar”In this midweek Lenten series, we’re looking at the Sacrament of the Altar--Holy Communion, the Lord’s Supper, are other names by which we know this sacrament instituted by Christ. Last week we began by focusing on “The Nature of the Sacrament.” We asked the foundational question, “What Is It?” And the answer came, “It is the true body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ under the bread and wine, instituted by Christ himself for us Christians to eat and to drink.” Our answer was based on what Jesus...

Whose Death Matters More?

I think the first time I grappled with this question was in an undergraduate philosophy course. The professor was a Yaley, very very smart, and loved to provoke us. His job, after all. So one day, when a famous person had died, he said in his flippant way, “obviously this man was much more important than Joe Schmoe down the block, and the society should value him more, and try harder to protect him and tend to him if he’s sick, etc etc.” And so we debated, in the way of young students. Who is to say that one man’s...

Obama says, “No federal abortion funding in new healthcare bill” but…

Regardless of anything Barack Obama has said there will be federal funding for abortions in his new healthcare scheme and this is one of the major problems Americans have with it. An analysis of the new healthcare bill, posted by the White House, indicates Obama has no intension of cutting federal funding for abortions in this latest “new” version of healthcare. The new plan will provide $11 billion to expand Community Health Centers that will certainly do abortions. Apparently Obama and his Party believe Americans especially Pro Lifers are fools. The projected price tag for aborting millions of American babies...

Laura Chinchilla: Pro-Life Catholic Woman Elected President of Costa Rica

I write as a U.S. Citizen who loves my country and is deeply concerned over its loss of a moral compass. This is most obvious when we consider the acceptance of the term “abortion right” in the media. Abortions do not have rights, people do, no-one has a right to take innocent human life, period. The notion that freedom of choice includes a “right” to reach into a womb and kill our youngest neighbor at any time and for any reason with surgical strikes or chemical weapons is simply evil. Legal abortion amounts to a commodification of human persons. They...

Raise happy kids, put your marriage first

Want your kids to be happy and successful? Well, then couples should spend less time striving to be perfect parents - and instead try to be perfect spouses. The advice comes from family therapist and Wall Street Journal writer David Code in a new book entitled To Raise Happy Kids, Put Your Marriage First . He said that kids become demanding and dissatisfied if they receive too much attention from over-anxious ‘helicopter parents’ who hover over them constantly. Instead, parents should leave their children to forge their own path and instead focus on having a fulfilled marriage to provide them...

Lithium-Ion Battery Life Could Reach 20 Years

Japanese research and development firm Eamex claims to have found a new way to increase the typical average life of a high-capacity lithium-ion battery. Eamex's new technology will allow the demanding batteries to sustain over 10,000 recharges over the course of 20 years. This rather dramatic increase in performance is made possible by new techniques such as a stabilization process of the battery's electrodes, which in-turn puts less stress on the battery's tin. This maintains the bonding of particles for a longer period of time and reduces the overall deterioration process. The result is a battery that lasts up to...
